C.P.Railway

The Canadian Pacific Railway is a public company with over 15,000 employees and market capitalization of US $7 billion in 2008.[3]It is publicly traded on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker CP.

Diesel locomotives

In 1937, the CPR acquired its first diesel-electric locomotive, a custom built one-of-a-kind switcher numbered 7000. This locomotive was not successful and was not repeated. Production model diesels were imported from American Locomotive Company (Alco) starting with five model S-2 yard switchers in 1943 and followed by further orders. In 1949, operations on lines in Vermont were dieselized with Alco FA1 road locomotives (8 A and 4 B units), 5 Alco RS-2 road switchers, 3 Alco S-2 switchers and 3EMD E8 passenger locomotives. In 1948 Montreal Locomotive Works began production of Alco designs.[citation needed] In 1949, the CPR acquired 13 Baldwin designed locomotives from the Canadian Locomotive Company for its isolated Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway, and Vancouver Island was quickly dieselized. Following that successful experiment, the CPR started to dieselise its main network. Dieselization was completed 11 years later, with its last steam locomotive running on 6 November 1960. The CPR's first-generation locomotives were mostly made by General Motors Diesel and Montreal Locomotive Works, (American Locomotive Company designs), with some made by the Canadian Locomotive Company to Baldwin and Fairbanks Morse designs. CP was the first railway in North America to pioneer AC traction diesel-electric locomotives, in 1984. In 1995 CP turned to General Electric GE Transportation Systems for the first production AC traction locomotives in Canada, and now has the highest percentage of AC locomotives in service of all North American Class I railways. As of early 2007, 578 of the CPR's 1,669 locomotives are AC.[citation

Levi's and Other International Garments

Levi's, Gap garment workers in Cambodia on strike to demand pay increase

Sopheng Cheang, The Associated Press

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - Workers at a large Cambodian garment factory that makes clothes for Levi's, Gap and other well-known international brands are striking for more pay and better working conditions.

More than 5,000 workers from the Singaporean-owned SL Garment Processing (Cambodia) Ltd. failed to reach an agreement with their employers Tuesday to end an 11-day strike.

Ath Thon, director of the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers, said workers are demanding an increase in their base pay of $61 a month for eight-hour days, six days a week.

He said they want a $5 salary hike and an extra $25 a month for transportation and housing.

SL Garment's website says it makes clothes for more than two dozen international labels that include J. Crew, Old Navy, Banana Republic, H&M and Levi's, whose website in turn lists the company as a supplier.

Cambodia's garment industry is the main foreign exchange earner for the poor Southeast Asian country. Its garment exports in 2011 were worth about $4.3 billion.

"We will not stop our strike until our problems are solved," said Teng Ry, 24, one of thousands picketing the factory on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.

He said workers were regularly required to work on their one day off a week or denied sick days and ordered to work up to 16-hour shifts.

Long shifts are compensated with overtime pay but factory owners are not respecting Cambodian labour law by requiring employees to work against their will, he said.

Eah Chip Eang, the personnel manager for SL Garment Processing, said he regretted that a bargaining session with worker representatives, union officials and social affairs ministry officials failed to reach an agreement.

He accused the union representative of refusing to negotiate, and said the workers' demands were too much for the company to accept, even though the demand for $25 for transportation and housing had been reduced to $10.

He also denied that his company forces workers to work against their will and up to 16 hours per day, while acknowledging that some do work overtime.

Negotiations continue at Canadian Pacific

OTTAWA, May 26, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Negotiations are ongoing with Canadian Pacific (CP) and will likely continue through the weekend. The Teamster Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) bargaining committee is meeting with conciliators and with the employer today. Pensions, fatigue management and work rules are still at issue.

"I can't help but wonder if the proxy battle within the CP Board of Directors has some life left in it. I get the sense there is a conflict behind the scenes and it may now be affecting the CP bargaining position at a critically important time." said TCRC vice-president Doug Finnson."

On the picket lines

Mr. Finnson commends the behaviour of the workers on the picket lines.

"No incident has been reported," said Mr. Finnson. "The 5000 workers we represent are disciplined. I'm very proud of them."

Dozens of photos were posted on the Teamsters Canada Twitter page, and moral is high among the striking workers.

"Thanks to the support from our members, we stand united and strong."

CP's motivation

Teamsters Canada president Robert Bouvier has an explanation on what is behind CP's attempt to reduce pensions.

"I think there's only one reason they're asking for these concessions: to further enrich a handful of shareholders at the expense of workers. CP workers strike is in a way a battle for all Canadian workers."

Teamsters members, the public and the media are invited to follow the latest news on the strike at twitter.com/TeamstersCanada.

The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.

Press Release: Calgary IT Consulting Team Saves Downtown Oil & Gas Firm From a Computer Cowboy

Business
Calgary is known for its cowboy tradition, but what happens to your business IT systems when they’re managed by a computer cowboy? Business IT systems must be left to the professionals as one Calgary small business learned the hard way before calling in the cavalry from CTECH to fix things up.
Calgary IT Consulting
CTECH is well-known across Calgary for its commitment to helping the vibrant oil and gas sector with professional IT support services as well as its 90-second help desk guarantee. Commitment to excellence makes CTECH stand out from the crowd.
Having a rock solid reputation in the Calgary energy community provides CTECH with a constant stream of junior oil and gas firms looking for a trustworthy resource for their IT support. This was the case when one of our clients referred us to a peer.
“We live the Go Giver model,” said CTECH President Carl Fransen. “We never bad mouth a competitor. Our competitors have reasons for the way they do things, even if it doesn’t follow many of the best practices CTECH believes in”.
Our new client purchased a secondhand IBM server from an IT firm in Calgary. Originally, this IBM server cost $10,000, and the second-hand price of $5,000 seemed like a great deal. However, when CTECH’s team of support engineers started to peel back the skin of the onion, this “great deal” made the business owner cry.
Purchases with no warranty coverage, failing hard drives and a list of components that had seen better days, this once great deal ended up costing this Calgary oil and gas environmental firm more than if the executives had invested in the right solution from day one.
After meeting with the decision makers, CTECH came up with a DELL solution that cost less than what had been spent on the secondhand server. The Dell solution would provide four times the power of the IBM server it replaced and everything else that our client required. They now enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that the DELL server solution has a 4-hour service guarantee. Regardless of what time of day or night service is needed, someone will have the issue resolved in four hours or less.
CTECH went above and beyond the call of duty by providing a wider range of services than its predecessor. Our client now has the right security on its network, ensuring that those with the need-to-know can access corporate records on the network; staff can work remotely when required; collaboration and sharing is enhanced, and all team members can share calendars, contacts, and information when necessary.
Our client also enjoys a corporate Intranet service that facilitates the management of compliance updates and business documents.
What we learned from this experience is how important it is to have IT support from a company that understands the needs of the Calgary oil and gas industry, knows how to design solutions that meet the budgets of Calgary businesses and can provide them with live help desk professionals around the clock.
CTECH provides this level of service for all clients in the Calgary region. We specialize in hotels and oil and gas; however, if you are relying on a “Computer Cowboy” for your IT, you may want to call us for a second opinion.

Multicultralism (Tribes)

Go Dutch
Go the Dutch - but why wait until 2013?
The Netherlands, where six per cent of the population is now Muslim, is scrapping multiculturalism: The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands.
A new integration bill, which Dutch Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner presented to parliament on June 16, reads: "The government shares the social dissatisfaction over the multicultural society model, and plans to shift priority to the values of the Dutch people. In the new integration system, the values of the Dutch society play a central role. With this change, the government steps away from the model of a multicultural society.
The letter continues: "A more obligatory integration is justified because the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary because otherwise the society gradually grows apart and eventually no one feels at home anymore in the Netherlands .
The new integration policy will place more demands on immigrants. For example, immigrants will be required to learn the Dutch language, and the government will take a tougher approach to immigrants who ignore Dutch values or disobey Dutch law.
The government will also stop offering special subsidies for Muslim immigrants because, according to Donner; "It is not the government's job to integrate immigrants." (How bloody true).
The government will introduce new legislation that outlaws forced marriages and will also impose tougher measures against Muslim immigrants who lower their chances of employment by the way they dress. More specifically, the government will impose a ban on face-covering, Islamic burqas as of January 1, 2013. Holland has done that whole liberal thing, and realized - maybe too late - that creating a nation of tribes will kill the nation itself.

The future of Australia , the UK and Canada may well be read here. READERS NOTE: Muslim immigrants leave their countries of birth because of civil and political unrest "CREATED BY THE VERY NATURE OF THEIR CULTURE."

Countries like Holland, Canada, the UK and Australia have an established way of life that actually works, so why embrace the unworkable? If Muslims do not wish to accept another culture, the answer is simple; "STAY WHERE YOU ARE!!"
This gives a whole new meaning to the term; 'Dutch Courage' - Unfortunately Australian, UK and Canadian politicians don't have the ... guts to do the same. There's a whole lot of truth here!!!!
ELECTION 2013 IS COMING. A Nation of Sheep, Breeds a Government of Wolves! I'M 100% for PASSING THIS ON!!! Let's Take a Stand!!!
Borders: Closed!
Language: English
Culture: The British Constitution, is the Bill of Rights!
Drug Free: Mandatory Drug Screening before Welfare!
NO freebies to: Non-Citizens! We the people are coming!!!

Only 86% will send this on. Should be a 100%. What will you do?

Medicine Hat's Wildrose MLAs were assigned the areas of government they will be responsible for critiquing at a special information session in Edmonton on Tuesday.
Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes

Cypress Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes will be responsible for Infrastructure and Transportation and Medicine Hat MLA Blake Pedersen for Arts, Culture and Community Services.
"I am very pleased with Infrastructure and Transportation," said Barnes. It means I can hold the government's feet to the fire regarding the Dunmore Road overpass and the hospital expansion," said Barnes. "The government has spent $38 billion since 2006, which is the most per capita of all the provinces. We're spending the most and whether we are getting value for that will be part of my job."
Barnes has already talked to the necessary individuals to arrange for a tour of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital expansion to see for himself what has been accomplished to date.
"I am not sure yet when that will take place," said Barnes.
Pedersen says he feels he is well suited to the position as critic for Arts, Culture and Community Services.
"Medicine Hat is rich in culture, heritage and the arts," said Pedersen. "Sometimes this aspect is neglected and it is very important particularly in attracting people like doctors and lawyers to a region."
Pedersen says he's loved music all his life, enjoyed a period as a drummer when growing up, has enjoyed meeting those involved in the arts in Medicine Hat and is looking forward to promoting Arts, Culture and Community Services.
Details regarding where the Medicine Hat constituency office will be located is still under consideration.
"I've heard people express concern about parking issues where Rob Renner's office was located and people have said they want better access so I am taking all of that into consideration and should make a decision soon," said Pedersen. "I want to have an inviting front to the office."
Medicine Hat MLA Blake Pedersen
During the next couple weeks Barnes will be establishing not just one but possibly two constituency offices in the Cypress Medicine Hat Riding.
"Due to the geographically large riding there is additional funding for this riding perhaps making it possible to have two constituency offices," said Barnes.
Wildrose leader Danielle Smith said the official opposition will work towards balanced budgets, saving for the future, fixing the broken public health care system, supporting families and seniors, and improving democracy, accountability and ethics in government.
"While we will not needlessly oppose the Redford PCs, we intend to use our role as official opposition to ensure that Albertans' voices are clearly heard in the Alberta Legislature," Smith said in a press release.
A date for an official swearing in ceremony for MLAs has not been announced yet, by Premier Alison Redford, but is expected to take place on May 15.
Barnes and Pedersen mingled in Edmonton with a total of 39 new MLAs who were learning the ropes and are expected back in the constituency late on Thursday.
